5 Tips to Stay Fit During the Holidays

We all know that December is a very tough month to stay active. The weather is starting to get colder, your office/work Christmas parties are happening, lots of social gatherings and an abundance of drinks and treats. We have compiled a short list of 5 things you can do to try and stay healthy during the holiday season. This will make your start to 2019 so much easier and your New Year’s fitness goals much more achievable.

1. Exercise in the morning: Often this time of year things come up as the day goes on and if you wait until the end of the day to workout then too often it gets pushed to the side. Make it the first part of your day and get it out of the way early

2. Track your steps: you can use a wearable fitness device such as an Apple watch, Garmin or Fitbit, or you can download one of the many free step counting apps on your mobile phone. Try to set a goal of at least 10,000 steps per day and that will get you on the move

3. Prioritize Sleep: If you get the appropriate rest at night (try for 8 hours) then you will be recharged and ready to go the next day. It is tough to be active when you are tired and you won’t get the most out of your workouts

4. Quick, high intensity workouts: If you keep your workouts to about one hour in duration then it is easier to stay motivated and make it part of your routine. Make your workouts high intensity that really get your heart rate going and when they are shorter then the “I can’t find the time” excuse is not very legitimate

5. Take advantage of seasonal activities: just because the weather is colder does not mean there aren’t fun outdoor activities you can do. Skating, skiing, sledding, snow-shoeing… enjoy the Winter Wonderland!

Your January self will thank you if you start these five things now. Waiting until January 1 for the “new you” is not the ideal approach.

Happy Holidays!
