Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos are getting a divorce after 25 years together. They met back in 1993 where they both worked at hedge fund D.E. Shaw. Bezos then went on to found Amazon a year later.
Bezos is currently estimated to be worth approximately US$137 billion, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index. This divorce will reshape the world’s wealthiest billionaires rankings. Assuming an equal split of the fortune, MacKenzie would be worth an estimated US$69 billion making her the world’s richest woman. This split would also make Microsoft founder Bill Gates once again the world’s richest person at a net worth of US$94 billion.
The couple reside in the state of Washington and according to the website of McKinley Irvin (a law firm in the region), Washington is a community property State. This means that all debt and property acquired during the marriage will be divided equally unless the couple come to an alternative agreement.
We will have to wait and see how this plays out.
