Applying for Life Insurance with High Blood Pressure

There is a common misconception that applying for life insurance if you have high blood pressure can be difficult and that you won't be approved. To the surprise of many, high blood pressure is not always looked at as a superior risk by underwriters.

The biggest thing that underwriters are looking for when evaluating an applicant with high blood pressure is that the condition is stable. If you are recently diagnosed and taking medication, sometimes it is best to wait for six months to a year before applying and that shows the underwriter that it is under control.

Most insurers will approve cases at standard rates if an applicant is on high blood pressure medication but they have been taking their medication regularly and have not been diagnosed within the last six months. Also, they will be looking to see that you have not had to continuously increase your dosage.
